Improving Flood Forecasting Capacity of DMH to Strengthen Flood Early Warning System in Myanmar

Date: 1 Oct 2015 - 30 Dec 2017

Department: Climate Change and Climate Risk Management

Donor Agency: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway

Location: Myanmar

Description

Myanmar has been facing recurrent riverine floods, especially in the deltaic areas, affecting nearly two million people annually. In addition, the country has also been experiencing flash floods in mountainous upper reaches creating havoc conditions. Floods in Myanmar usually occur during the southwest monsoon season from June to October. Therefore, a reliable and accurate flood forecasting systems is needed to provide timely warnings for floods to at risk communities in the vulnerable areas of the country.

Key Activities

?? Adopt and calibrate a suitable hydrological model (numerical) for one river basin in Myanmar; ? Develop flood hazard maps for a selected river basin in Myanmar; and ? Improve end-to-end flood early warning system in Myanmar.

Output

? Hydrological modeling system for flood forecasting is institutionalized. ? Lead-time of flood early warnings for riverine floods is increased. ? Inundation areas due to riverine floods are accurately identified. ? Training module on ?Hydrological Modeling? is developed and integrated into hydrological training curriculum at DMH.
