Towards A Common CBDRR Framework for Myanmar Red Cross Society

Date: 15 Feb 2013 - 24 Aug 2013

Department: Disaster Risk Management Systems

Donor Agency: French Red Cross

Location: Myanmar

Description

Community-based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) practices in Myanmar have evolved through a process of sustained involvement of the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) with the support of IFRC and PNSs. The MRCS has been able to implement CBDRR/CBDRM activities in village and township since 2003 by building capacities of the Red Cross volunteers at township levels in community actions as well as implementing specific interventions supported by IFRC and FRC/CRCS between 2003-2013. These include National Disaster Responce Teams/Emergency Responce Team training, urban risk reduction activities, and school preparedness as well as post disaster recovery operations after Cyclone Nargis and Giri.

The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) aims at a longer-term programmatic approach towards standardization of CBDRR to ensure that the commonly agreed tools and methodologies are solidly embedded into the ongoing and future CBDRM activities by MRCS. ADPC would bring its expertise of CBDRM but focus on the Red Cross model and act as a facilitator to build capacities within MRCS during the adaptation process as well as assist MRCS in implementing it in future.
