Description

Myanmar is under transition and a number of developmental interventions are underway. The developmental interventions can reshape the disaster risks, even unintentionally, hence, DRR informed development is very important. It is important to strengthen systems, build capacity, develop tools, etc for strengthening DRR in Myanmar.

Relief and Resettlement Department under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement is the nodal department for Disaster Management in Myanmar and it is important to provide technical support to RRD on Disaster Risk Reduction. Capacity building is one of the key functions of the department.

In the context of recent development and advancement in the field of DRR, the Relief and Resettlement Department with support of the Technical Working Group of the DRR Working Group revised and up-dated its training program. Also, capacity building of 60 government officers form line ministries is being undertaken. It is important that the technical support to officers of RRD and line department is provided in 2012-2013.

Key Activities

1. Up-dated Disaster Management Course:

- Enhance understanding and capacities on Disaster Risk Management and cross-cutting issues for government officials from various government functionaries at regional/state, district, township and village tract level
- Providing overview on range of DRM array in Myanmar including risks, natural hazards and DRM system in Myanmar (concern agencies, mandates and functions)
- Enhancing skills to undertake DRM activitiss for future application in real work through exposing participants to a number of exercises, discussion, group works, and actual DRM work at filed trip sites
- Developing insightful understanding on the linkages of DRM and the broader development context, and considerations towards disaster resilient and sustainable development of Myanmar

2. Deliverable:

- Providing consultancy services to support Relief and Resettlement Department on DRR. The overall objective is to build capacity of identified RRD and line department officers on DRR i.e. the training program and thus strengthening the DRR system

Output

- Revised training documents (handbook, guidebook and power point presentations) in printed form
- Project completion report with achievements and recommendations prepared
- Prepare a case study on the development and significance of the intervention
