Building and Strengthening Capacity on Seismic Monitoring System and Seismic Hazard Assessment in Myanmar
Date: 1 Jun 2012 - 31 Dec 2014
Department:
Donor Agency: Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)
Location: Myanmar
Description
In view of current emergent needs from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), ADPC in close collaboration with international experts would like to support DMH in developing and enhancing its technical capacity. Specifically the objectives of the project, compartmentalized into support for the seismological sections under DMH, are as follows: To review DMH?s existing earthquake monitoring network; to catalog and assess the current states of all seismic stations, software tools, and technical staff; to identify gaps in DMH?s technical capacity and means to reduce the gaps; to introduce new techniques and tools that can be used to systemize the earthquake monitoring network and to advance the data processing and analysis of DMH; to develop and enhance the technical capacity of DMH staff who are tasked with seismic monitoring; To complement the works being performed by other international agencies (such as JICA, RIMES, CEA) for enhancing the Myanmar seismic network; to improve the current seismic hazard and risk analysis.
Key Activities
Task 1: Developing the seismic monitoring, seismic networks and earthquake data processing and data analysis capacity in Myanmar
Task 2: Improving the current seismic hazard assessments by an upgrade of the hazard maps for Myanmar, more site specific hazard analysis
Task 3: Establishing a long-term capacity building in the fields of earthquake monitoring, hazard and risk through short-term training programs
Output
Training workshops in related technical subjects for DMH staff; training program for government professionals on how to utilize the outcomes from seismic risk assessment conducted in the city of Mandalay; organize a visit to Norway for one or two technical staff by DMH.
