The technology available nowadays helps advance the strategies used to better prepare communities for the impacts of disasters. One of ADPC’s focal areas is the assist in developing early warning systems that allow timely action to be taken to reduce disaster risks in advance.

Climate change refers to a change in climate patterns that negatively impact the composition of the atmosphere and land use in the long-run. Thailand’s geographical position as a low lying country makes it more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Thailand’s average temperature has already risen, making weather changes more extreme; affecting both organizational sectors and communities.
Have you observed the impacts of climate change and what measures have you taken to mitigate the effects in your day-to-day life?
Smog builds up from increased carbon emissions to the atmosphere and is one of the negative impacts of climate change. In February, Bangkok was declared a pollution control zone upon which protectionary measures were issued to encourage residents to wear a special mask to prevent breathing in the harmful particles.
What pre-disaster measures would you implement to reduce the impacts of smog in future?
Communities play a very important role when faced with disasters. Are you familiar with the Sendai Framework for Disaster risk Reduction? One of the framework’s goals is to build community resilience against disasters by bringing communities together to manage the impacts of disasters in a timely and efficient manner.
How does your community deal with the impacts of disasters?
Individuals trained in disaster mitigation can transfer their skills and knowledge to their communities to collectively reduce the impact of disasters on the community as a whole.

What kind of training do you feel would benefit your community?
Traditionally, health care facilities focus on providing medicinal and health-related services to individuals that are unwell. Resilient health care facilities should be able to withstand the impacts of disasters while continuing to provide sufficient health care in periods of heavy demand during or after disasters.

Bangkok’s network of rivers and canals overflowed during the 2011 floods. The capital lost its natural defences against flooding and 66/76 provinces in Thailand were classified as high-risk to flooding. As Thailand experiences heavy rainfall during monsoon season, flooding has an annual impact on Thailand.
How are you affected by floods during the monsoon season? How would you suggest Thailand’s system be managed to better prepare for floods in future?
How could your community and government better prepare for floods in the coming years?
The agriculture industry is highly vulnerable to changes in weather and rain patterns. Thailand’s agricultural industry employs almost 40 million people making the nation heavily dependent on the sustainability of the industry.
How do you think climate change is affecting the agriculture industry?
What disaster impacts have you seen the agriculture industry face? And how would you reduce the impacts?
What about the sectors you plan to work in, how has it been affected by disasters in the past?
SMEs represent more than 99 percent of Thai businesses. Often, these businesses are unprepared for emergency situations. In 2011 alone, over 550,000 Thai SMEs suffered a total loss of 2 billion USD per month during the floods.
