The International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) has selected ADPC to be one of its 15 World Centers of Excellence during the World Landslide Forum 3 in Beijing, China in the beginning of June. ADPC received the certificate in recognition of its landslide risk management initiatives in Asia.

The World Landslide Forum 3 was organized under the theme Landslide Risk Mitigation: Toward a Safer Geo-Environment by China Geological Survey under the Ministry of Land and Resources of the People’s Republic of China and ICL. Director N.M.S.I. Arambepola from ADPC received the certificate from Dr. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, during the forum.

The International Consortium on Landslides was established in January 2002 at the Kyoto Symposium as an international non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization. It is supported by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR); intergovernmental programs such as the International Hydrological Program of UNESCO; as well as the Government of Japan and other governmental bodies.

ICL has been registered as a legal body under the Japanese law for non-profit organizations since 2002.

The World Centers of Excellence for landslides are selected by the Global Promotion Committee of the International Program on Landslides (IPL).
