Media Release: Improving SMEs' resiliency by building capacity in business continuity planning

In order to strengthen small and medium enterprises´ (SMEs) resilience to natural hazards, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) organizes Training of Trainers on business continuity planning (BCP) on 18 - 21 February 2014 in Bangkok.

Interested media professionals are invited to a press briefing on 18 February at 10 - 11.15 am at Rattanakosin Lounge, The Sukosol Hotel in Bangkok. The press briefing will be attended by guest speakers including Dr. Wimonkan Kosumas, Deputy Director General of Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP), senior official from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Mr. Shinichi Okabe, Advisor of Tokio Marine and Nichido Risk Consulting Co. Ltd, Mr. Takahiro Ono, BCP Manager from Mitsubishi Corporation Insurance Co. Ltd, Mr. Shane Wright, Executive Director of ADPC and Mr. Aslam Perwaiz, Head of Department of Disaster Risk Management Systems of ADPC as well as representatives from the Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC), the APEC SME Working Group and the JTI Foundation.

The training is designed to equip participants with knowledge of business impact and risk analysis as well as drafting and updating business continuity plans. It also deals with the essential steps of developing business continuity recovery strategies and covers the contents of the ISO 22301 Standard for business continuity management.

“The business community needs to prepare and participate in disaster risk reduction efforts, but securing business continuity during emergencies is the priority. The SMEs in Thailand need to discern the importance of establishing effective business continuity plans and commerce networks as part of their preparedness,” says Mr. Aslam Perwaiz, Head of Department of Disaster Risk Management Systems at ADPC.

The course module and training material will be based on the Guidebook on SME Business Continuity Planning developed by APEC SME Crisis Management Center in collaboration with Asian Disaster Reduction Center.

The training is part of ADPC´s project on private sector engagement in disaster risk reduction funded by JTI Foundation.
