Selected Websites Related to Development and Disasters in Mountainous Areas

The culminating event of the International Year of Mountains 2002 was the Bishkek Global Mountain Summit, held from 28 October to 1 November 2002. The Mountain Platform was a key product of the summit and builds on the many substantial declarations developed at other major global events on mountains. It was presented by the Government of Kyrgyzstan to be forwarded to the United Nations General Assembly for consideration. The purpose of the Platform is to provide guidance to governments and others on how to improve the livelihoods of mountain people, protect mountain ecosystems and use mountain resources more wisely. Details of the summit are also found on the site.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development focuses on the development of economically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystems and the improvement of living standards of mountain populations, especially in the Hindukush-Himalayan region. The site provides useful information on current projects in the region, publications, websites and other resources.

The official website of the International Year of Mountains 2002 promotes sustainable development in mountain regions through the protection of mountain ecosystems, promoting peace and stability in mountain regions, and helping mountain people attain their goals and aspirations.

The Mountain Institute is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization committed since 1972 to the preservation of mountain environments and the advancement of mountain cultures around the world. The Institute has administered conservation, research, development and education programs in the Andean, Appalachian and Himalayan mountain ranges.

The UNEP Mountain Network portal provides access to major events and information on mountain environments and development, including mountain livelihoods, transport, mining and energy, water, biodiversity, tourism, conflict and hazards, and climate change. Also found on this site are case studies, best practices, assessments done in mountainous areas, links, policies and conventions, and lists of events.

The United Nations World Disaster Reduction Campaigns website, hosted by the UNISDR, aims at promoting, creating and increasing public awareness on disaster reduction for sustainable mountain development, the theme for this year’s disaster reduction campaign. The website provides electronic formats of information booklets on mountains, Volcano Daily (an educational booklet for children), announcements, a calendar of events and other information related to mountains.
