This book is an independent analysis of the background, history, context, nature, impact and response to the cyclones in Andhra Pradesh, a southern Indian state. It includes the basic principles of disaster management and emphasizes the importance of a synergy of policies and political commitments, as well as people’s action.

These guidelines deal with the construction of wind and cyclone-resistant buildings of both engineered and non-engineered types. The aim is to briefly explain the action of wind on buildings and state the general principles of planning and design; to bring out details to prevent non-structural damage to the various buildings; to deal with the safety aspects of traditional non-engineered buildings; and finally, to suggest retrofitting details which could be adopted in existing buildings to minimize the damages under high winds.

This publication is an outcome of an impact assessment study of the pilot project implemented by the Orissa State Disaster Mitigation Authority. It covers four areas: effectiveness and impact of the project, impact with regards to community capacity-building to deal with the risk, sustainability and replicability of the community-based disaster-preparedness model and the cost-effectiveness of the project.

This paper was dedicated to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg in September 2002. It discusses how current advances in the science and forecasting of tropical cyclones can be applied to disaster preparedness and mitigation. Presented in three languages - English, French and Spanish - this document covers the observational aspects of the monitoring of tropical cyclones, new developments in tropical cyclone forecasting and social impacts of their forecasts and warnings.

The 2002-release is the fourth annual report of the Landmine Monitor. This initiative by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines contains reports from every country of the world with respect to antipersonnel landmine use, production, stockpiling, trade, humanitarian mine clearance, mine risk education and mine survivor assistance. These reports have been widely hailed as vital documents by treaty signatories and non-signatories alike, as well as by mine action practitioners, journalists and other NGOs.
