The 28th Disaster Management Course (DMC) was held in Thailand from 5-23 November 2001. DMC28 was attended by 40 participants from 14 countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, East Timor, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and USA.

The course focused on globalization and its consequences for disaster management, frameworks and models, management tool-kits, risk reduction strategies, recovery and reconstruction, and disaster trends, issues and challenges.

The teaching methodology included simulation exercises, videos, creative presentations of group reports, interactive lectures and field visits to disaster-prone areas. A study visit was arranged to Sa Keaw province where course participants were introduced to the dangers of landmines and the difficulties of de-mining.

As ADPC's flagship course, the DMC has run since 1986 with middle and senior level disaster managers from around the world, especially from Asia-Pacific, with the aim of equipping participants with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in risk analysis and management.
