Green Initiatives consist of environmentally friendly techniques and utilizes natural processes and ecosystem services to address the challenges present in urban areas/cities.

Scientific studies have suggested that green initiatives can increase urban resilience against climate change by reducing urban heat island effects, increasing thermal comfort, decreasing surface runoff, and insulating houses against temperature extremes, among many other benefits.

In addition, studies have also suggested that green spaces act as a refuge for urban residents during periods with high levels of stress, thus contributing to urban dwellers’ physical and mental health and the social resilience of cities.

For this reason, ADPC, in partnership with the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), is co-organizing a webinar on “Green Initiatives for enhancing Urban Climate Resilience in Southeast Asia” on 29 October 2021 from 2 pm to 4 pm (BKK time). The webinar will showcase success stories from the Southeast Asian region where green initiatives have been adopted to build urban resilience to climate extremes.

Register via Zoom here.

The main aim of the webinar is to raise awareness among urban resilience practitioners on the vital importance and the positive impacts of Green Initiatives in meeting the challenges faced by Southeast Asian cities due to climate extreme events.

Mr. Hans Guttman, ADPC’s Executive Director, and Dr. Nicola Tollin, University of Southern Denmark, will deliver the welcome remarks. Mr. Lalit Kumar Dashora, Senior Multi Hazard Early Warning Specialist at ADPC, will moderate the webinar.

Mr. Aslam Perwaiz, ADPC’s Deputy Executive Director, with other expert speakers, will be speaking on the following thematic areas:

  • Urbanization in Southeast Asia and Disaster Risks from Climate Extremes
  • Sponge City Concept
  • Benefits of Green Initiatives for improving Public Health and Well-being of urban communities
  • Building urban community resilience with green initiatives

The webinar will provide valuable insights for urban planners, urban designers, policymakers, health and disaster risk management practitioners, and researchers on how to build urban resilience to climate extremes in an environmentally friendly way.

This webinar is one of the knowledge dissemination initiatives targeting urban resilience under the “Urban Resilience to Climate Extremes (URCE) in Southeast Asia” program implemented by ADPC under the aegis of Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).

The webinar sets a strong foundation for discussion and knowledge exchange in anticipation of World Cities Day, which falls on 31 October , whose theme for this year is “Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience.”
