BACKGROUND
The CBDRR course provides an
opportunity for practitioners to learn
essential skills and knowledge in community
based disaster risk management to address
implementation challenges in a systematic
manner. CBDRR participants acquire tools and
obtain knowledge on “how to” design and
implement programs for reducing disaster
risks and vulnerability and building
community capacity to promote a ‘culture of
safety.’ Through exercises and simulations
participants practice risk assessment and
risk management planning.
The participants will have a
chance to learn about globally acknowledged
programs and projects on community based
disaster risk management from leaders of
these initiatives, with a particular focus
on examples from South and South East Asian
and Pacific regions. The CBDRR course
tackles the issues in disaster risk
management from a developmental perspective,
discusses the issues and problems concerning
sustainability, replication/ adaptation of
CBDRR practice and integration of risk
management plans with government and
non-government development plans.
OBJECTIVES
The course will train
participants to be able to:

The course is extended over
10 workdays with one weekend off. It is

TRAINING
METHODOLOGY
CBDRR provides
the participants’ fun filled learning
through exercises, simulations, videos,
discussion forums and interactive lectures.
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS
The course challenges each
participant to:

Work in a multicultural
class with diverse individual experience
levels

plan for their organisation or
environment

Participate in active
learning events
Certificates will be awarded
to participants who complete all of the
course components.
PARTICIPANTS
CBDRR is a specialized course
catering to the competency and knowledge
needs of operation level people who are or
would be involved in designing and
implementing CBDRR projects and programs in
their organizations. Participants come from
many sectors including, local government
departments, NGOs, INGOs, UN, IFRC,
emergency response agencies and the private
sector. Participants from policy and senior
management levels of government, UN, donor
organizations and INGOs are welcome if they
are interested in learning to learn about
how CBDRR is operationalised.
As course participants come
from a diverse range of countries and
organizations, and the class size is limited
to thirty persons, ADPC accepts nominations
from Asia and the Pacific on a “first come,
first served” basis, provided the applicant
meets the requirements. A limited number of
participants from other regions will also be
accepted, on a case by case and "first come
first served" basis.
LANGUAGE
All teaching and course
materials are in English, so it is essential
that participants are fully conversant in
English.
RESOURCE PERSONS
Internationally experienced
practitioners and experts from APDC and its
partner organizations conduct and facilitate
the CBDRR course.
COURSE FEE
The tuition fee is US$ 2000
with a registration fee of US$40. For the
convenience of participants, ADPC provides a
Full Package Course Fee which includes
tuition fee, registration fee, 13 days (20
July – 1st Aug) for all meals
(Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) with a choice
of alternative accommodation. A Full Package
of Course Fee with a twin-share
accommodation is at US$ 2820 per participant
while a Full Package with a single
accommodation is at US$ 3140 per
participant. ADPC will try to fulfill all
participants’ accommodation requests but
cannot guarantee providing a twin-share
accommodation package if there are no
partners available or willing to share a
room. In such a case, we will inform the
participant in advance that he or she is
required to pay for the course fee with
single accommodation package.
Travel cost is not included
in the course fee. All participants are
responsible for arranging their own travel
and visa expenses, including transportation
from and to airport, and also for
health/accident insurance and personal
expenses.
GROUP DISCOUNT
ADPC has established an
arrangement which recognizes the special
needs of sponsoring organizations who wish
to send large groups to the course. This
operates when one single organization
decides to send a group of five persons to
the course, in which case the tuition fee
US$ 2000 will be waived for the sixth
participant from that organization.
Therefore, the sixth participant needs to
pay only the rest of amount after deducing
US$ 2000 tuition fee from the full package
of his choice.
PAYMENT
If you are selected to attend
the course, the payment should be
transferred to ADPC account through bank or
international demand draft (DD) not later
than 20 June 2008. Otherwise, your participation will be
cancelled. Please note that personal checks
are not acceptable.
ACCOMMODATION
The accommodation will be
arranged at the same hotel where the
training will be held. The room will be
arranged from 20th July to 1st
Aug. Please note that if participant wants
to stay a few more days in Bangkok prior to
and after the course, all arrangement and
expenses for the extra days will be born by
the participants.
REGISTRATION
Interested persons can apply
as individuals although preference will be
given to those sponsored by the
organizations.
Those participants who come as individuals
and are not sponsored by their
organizations, details of these requirements
will be sent to person in this category as
part of the course nomination procedure.
Those applicants who are sponsored by their
organizations, a letter of
endorsement/sponsorship from their
organizations is required to be submitted.

Pre-course information will be provided once
you have received the acceptance for the
course.
CANCELLATION
If you are unable to attend,
a substitute applicant is welcome to attend
in your place. Cancellation of attendance
should be notified at least 3 weeks prior to
course commencement; in which case, a full
refund less 15% of course fee for banking
charges and administrative costs will be
made. No refunds are available for
cancellation within 3 weeks prior to course
commencement.
