Resilience Intel: Report on climate information and services in BRACED countries

15 Dec 2015

Bangkok, Thailand

The Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Extremes and Disasters (BRACED) program has released its first Resilience Intel report on climate information and services.

The report is co-authored by Emily Wilkinson and Mirianna Budimir from the Overseas Development Institute, Atiq Kainan Ahmed from Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, and Gilbert Ouma from the University of Nairobi.

The BRACED program, funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom, helps people become more resilient to climate extremes in Asia, African Sahel and East African countries. The article discusses the opportunity to integrate climate services into resilience programming in these regions.

By adapting climate information to specific contexts within an overall resilience program, an enabling environment is created for better access, use and application of weather and climate information.

The article highlights the need to strengthen the capacity of climate information providers to ensure they are able to produce more localized, timely and accurate information. It also stresses the importance of institutionalizing continuous two-way communication between producers and end-users of the information to build resilience to hydro-meteorological disasters.
