ADPC and MET-Norway train experts in marine forecasting

1 Dec 2015

Bangkok, Thailand

H.E. Mr. Kjetil Paulsen, Norwegian Ambassador to Thailand, opened the workshop in Bangkok.

Identifying oceanic and meteorological phenomena at the genesis stage is of vital importance for ensuring proper preparedness for hydro-meteorological hazards. Tools and advanced forecasting techniques for analyzing marine and meteorological data can significantly enhance understanding of related disaster risks, and help countries establish appropriate measures to prepare for extreme weather events.

This week, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center with funding support from the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs convenes experts from six countries across South and Southeast Asia to a regional workshop on marine forecasting in Bangkok.

Facilitated by experts from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET-Norway) and ADPC the workshop focuses on building the capacity of oceanographers and meteorologists to utilize wave forecasting as well as storm surge and trajectory modeling for improved early warnings of extreme hydro-meteorological events.

Participants from six countries in Asia participate in the workshop on marine forecasting facilitated by ADPC and MET-Norway with
support from the Norwegian Government.

The workshop, held from 1 to 3 December, is participated by representatives from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, and is part of ADPC’s and the Norwegian Government’s long-term collaboration for strengthening preparedness for weather-induced natural disasters in the region.

MET-Norway, a leading meteorological service in Europe, has contributed to the program by introducing state-of-the-art techniques, models and tools as well as providing capacity building for improved hydro-meteorological services in target countries.
