Myanmar endorses Risk Assessment Roadmap developed in collaboration with ADPC

Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar

The Relief and Resettlement Department of Myanmar has endorsed the Risk Assessment Roadmap prepared with technical assistance from Asian Disaster Preparedness Center.

Launched in Nai Pyi Taw on the International Day for Disaster Reduction 13 October, the Roadmap outlines a step-by-step, structured process for risk identification and assessment. It identifies the expertise, capabilities, resources, and means of coordination that will be required to ensure an efficient implementation of the Roadmap.

Myanmar is prone to a wide range of natural and man-made hazards, which are magnified by climate change, environmental degradation, and rapid haphazard development in different parts of the country.

“The Roadmap aims to increase the country’s capacity to make risk-informed decisions and implement resilient development plans at various levels of governance,” says Dr. Marqueza Cathalina Reyes, Head of ADPC’s Disaster Risk Assessment and Monitoring Department.

The collaborative development of the Risk Assessment Roadmap was led by ADPC with inputs from key stakeholders and partners from the Government of Myanmar, non-governmental organizations, and United Nations agencies.

ADPC conducted a series of consultations that culminated in a final workshop held on 15 September 2015 in Nay Pyi Taw. The activities, including printing and dissemination of the Roadmap, were supported by UNICEF Myanmar.

The Roadmap is available here (in English). It will soon be published also in the local language.
