Planning for a resilient future in the agriculture sector in Myanmar

On 9 June, the Yezin Agriculture University hosted the first consultation workshop on Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) into Agriculture Development planning in Myanmar.

Dr. Myo Kywe, Rector of Yezin Agriculture University and Dr. Ye Tint Htun, Director General of the Department of Agriculture Research delivered the opening remarks. Both stressed the importance of integrating DRR and CCA into development planning due to the devastating impacts natural hazards can have on the agriculture sector in Myanmar.

Discussion topics included climate change and natural hazards affecting the agriculture production and proposed next steps to integrate DRR and CCA with a focus on creating resilient livelihoods especially in the urban areas of Myanmar.

The workshop was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Asian Disaster Preparedness Center. Senior Governmental officials from the Department of Agriculture Planning (DAP), Department of Agriculture (DOA), Department of Agriculture Research (DAR), Irrigation Department, in addition to state and township level officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, participated in the event.

Since 2004, ADPC has worked in close collaboration with the Government of Myanmar on Mainstreaming DRR and CCA into development planning. Currently, ADPC is working on integrating DRR and CCA into multi-sector planning. The multi-stakeholder workshop is part of ADPC’s technical support for Myanmar under Mainstreaming DRR into Development program, funded by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia.
