Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and its partners conducted a five-day training course on child-centered disaster risk management in Chengdu, China on 8–12 April 2015.
Ms. Hu Xiaochun, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disaster Relief under the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China and Ms. Wang Le, Deputy Country Director of Save the Children China Program opened the training course attended by 34 civil affairs officials from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Dr. Gu Linsheng, Executive Director of Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction of Sichuan University-Hong Kong Polytechnic University chaired the opening ceremony.
Organized with funding support from the Save the Children China Program, the nine-unit course focused on child-centered disaster risk management covering the basic terms and concepts in disaster management. The course also dealt with community-based disaster risk management and how to establish a community-based organization; participatory disaster risk assessment and its tools; and community-based disaster risk management planning, monitoring, evaluation and training.
The units were delivered in three classroom learning days, a one-day exercise in a community in Chengdu and a visit to Beichuan City that was destroyed by the Wenchuan earthquake on 12 May 2008.
Mr. Shane Wright, Executive Director of ADPC attended the closing ceremony and distributed certificates together with Dr. Gu Linsheng and Ms. Fan Xiaowen, Head of the Save the Children China Program Chengdu Office to the participants who completed the course.
The training will be followed by one more training course directed at civil affairs officials from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of China in 2016.
“ADPC will also be supporting the Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction in conducting separate training courses on community-based disaster risk management, including a training of trainers,” mentioned Dr. Jiang Lingling, ADPC’s Senior Program Manager responsible for the implementation of the training course in Chengdu.
The participants visited a community for an exercise in Chengdu.
The participants went on a field trip to Beichuan City, which was destroyed by the Wenchuan earthquake on 12 May 2008.
Mr. Shane Wright distributed a certificate to each participant together with Dr. Gu Linsheng, and Ms. Fan Xiaowen.
