Media release: Southeast Asian countries meet to learn from recent disasters and identify priority needs

8 - 9 Dec 2014

Bangkok, Thailand

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Bangkok Regional Hub organizes a high-level regional discussion forum Ready for Recovery: Learning from Recent Disasters and Setting the Priority Needs for Southeast Asia on 8−9 December 2014.

Interested media professionals are invited to a media conference on Monday 8 December at 10 am at Swissôtel Nai Lert Park, Bangkok. The media conference will be participated by H.E. Mr. Lutfi Rauf, Ambassador of Indonesia to Thailand, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Ms. Adelina Kamal, Head of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance Division at the ASEAN Secretariat, Mr. Sanny Jegillos, Senior Advisor at UNDP, and Mr. Shane Wright, Executive Director of ADPC.

Since the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004, other large disasters have hit the region causing suffering and devastation in many Southeast Asian countries. Out of the aftermath of the disasters, ASEAN member countries have learned important lessons and made much progress to improve post-disaster recovery.

“Disasters continue to strike the region and threaten lives, livelihoods, and human development. When a large disaster occurs, it is essential that we have arrangements and capacities in place to recover and reconstruct. The forum provides an important opportunity for countries to share experiences and lessons from post-disaster situations,” says Mr. Sanny Jegillos, Senior Advisor at UNDP.

Supported by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the high-level discussion forum will be participated by key government representatives from ASEAN member countries, United Nations agencies, national and regional stakeholders, and development partners. The forum will highlight the lessons from post-disaster needs assessments and recovery activities. The aim is to identify the priority needs for a Southeast Asian region, which is ready for recovery.
