Media Release: Regional round-table discussion on gender-inclusive approach to disaster management hosted in the Philippines

23 Nov 2014

Manila, Philippines

One year on from Typhoon Yolanda, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and Wilton Park will organize a workshop on Disaster prevention, preparedness and response in South and Southeast Asia: maximizing a gender-inclusive approach on 24−25 November.

Over 120 gender experts and disaster risk reduction practitioners from across the region, including the Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Vietnam, will come together to discuss how to make disaster risk management more gender-inclusive.

When a disaster hits, women are often the hardest hit group in society. Engaging women in disaster planning would save lives, protect assets and strengthen official disaster frameworks. Through a highly interactive program, participants will explore knowledge and skills in preventing and responding to disasters, and how this can be adapted and taken into account in disaster response.

"An understanding of the specific roles, responsibilities and capacities of women and men, girls and boys will positively impact response and recovery from natural disasters,“ says Madame Corazon Alma De Leon, former Secretary General of the Philippine Red Cross and Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of ADPC.

The workshop opens on 24 November at 09.00 at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, and interested media professionals are invited to attend the media conference at 11.00. The panel will include David Carden, Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Clara Rita Padilla, Executive Director of EnGendeRights Inc., and Gwendolyn Pang, Secretary General of the Philippine Red Cross.

The workshop is organized with support from the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
