On the road to resilience for businesses

1 Oct 2014

Bangkok, Thailand

Private companies, both large and small, are severely disrupted by the increasingly extreme events of natural disasters and are often pushed to the brink or even out of business.

Since 2003, ADPC has made significant efforts to build the capacity of SMEs and reduce resilience by aiming for national and international standards. Now ADPC will launch a conference called, “Towards a Resilient Business Community: Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Thailand”.

The one and a half day workshop will be conducted in English with optional Thai translation. It includes links to the decisions made surround the 6th AMCDRR conference and the Hyogo Framework for Action, giving participants the opportunity to see their role within the wider picture of disaster risk reduction.

Seeing the bigger picture

Through this training business owners can learn from Thailand’s private sector disaster resilience initiative, draw lessons from global best practices, and explore recommendations on future engagement for business continuity.

The Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP) of the Royal Thai Government has been working with Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in engaging the private sector and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand to embed disaster risk reduction into their core business activities. This aim hopes to be met through effective legislation, incentives, awareness raising and capacity building.

Research into this kind of work from other countries will be used to strengthen the success of the initiative. Studies carried out by ADPC indicated that global best practices from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand are going to help Thailand launch the “Thailand for Resilient Investment” initiative which will include conferences like this one and other events.
