Extinguishing fire risks in Nepal

ADPC Executive Director Mr. Shane Wright met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Federal Affairs and Local Development of Nepal Mr. Prakash Man Singh in the Government Complex at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu, Nepal.

During the meeting discussions centered around the key issues relating to Fire Hazard Mitigation in Nepal. Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal emphasized the establishment of legislation for Fire Hazard Mitigation, improvement of the Government’s fire-fighting capacity and enhancement of the capacity of fire-fighters from National to district levels.

Mr. Shane Wright talked about the current and future state of the fire service in Nepal providing several good examples from Australia and other countries.

He recommended to strengthen the fire-fighting capacity of professional staffs and the potential involvement of volunteers to reduce the fire hazard impact in the society.

“The use of fire-fighting equipment, training and community education is imperative for effective fire hazard mitigation in the country and must be supported by appropriate legislative frameworks,” advises Mr. Wright.

The Government team was comprised by the Deputy Prime Minister together with Joint Secretary of the Ministry, Executive Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Head of the Fire Brigade of Kathmandu Metropolitan.

ADPC hopes to work with the Nepalese Government to further develop the fire systems of Nepal in the future.
