Promoting investments for resilient nations and communities

22 - 26 Jun 2014

Bangkok, Thailand

The Royal Thai government in collaboration with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) organizes the 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangkok on 22−26 June 2014.

The conference will be a venue for countries, organizations and individual practitioners to meet and discuss the way forward in reducing disaster risk in the region. It will also be the final regional inter-governmental meeting in Asia before the completion of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005−15 and the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015.

The UN World Conference will be held in March 2014 in Japan to review the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action over the 10-year span and develop a post-2015 framework. A mid-term review of the ongoing framework showed progress in the form of substantial decrease in mortality rates due to natural hazards, but also highlighted the weak capacity of many local governments − even when disaster risk reduction is institutionalized into their policy.

The themes of the conference include the enhancement of local resilience, improving public investments in disaster and climate risk management as well as public and private partnerships in disaster risk reduction.
