Yangon, Myanmar

There has been major progress in improving weather forecasting and message dissemination from Myanmar’s meteorology department and local authorities, reports IRIN in its recent article ‘Myanmar storm warnings get better’.

“Improvement has been made in the forecasting, detection, and community preparedness, as well as early warning message generation and dissemination”, states ADPC’s Project Associate Than Than Myint in the article.

The government is now working to improve its early warning capacity through the installation of 30 automatic weather observation stations across the country by 2017, IRIN reports. When Nargis struck, there was only one radar station in the country which hadn’t been in operation since 1997.

“One thing is certain, that we should not expect the same level of fatalities seen after Cyclone Nargis,” Director Dr. Towashiraporn states from ADPC reports in the article.
