Dr. Bhichit Rattakul on Radio Thailand: Early warning system for earthquakes needed

9 May 2014

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Following the 6.3 Richter scale earthquake that struck Chiang Mai and many other areas in Northern Thailand on 5 May, Dr. Bhichit Rattakul, Special Advisor to Asian Disaster Preparedness Center talks to Radio Thailand. He emphasizes the critical need for the development of an early warning system for earthquakes and studies into current building infrastructure in vulnerable areas like Bangkok.

"There is no earthquake warning in the world today, but hopefully we can have less and less casualties. Luckily only one person passed away, but many people suffer from the earthquake effect. This is a warning sign that we need to look into the buildings", Dr. Bhichit Rattakul said in Radio Thailand's interview.

The earthquake was recorded to be one of the biggest to ever take place in Thailand and many buildings and roads were damaged. Protection of the infrastructure needs to take place for a faster recovery time and business continuity in built up areas, Dr. Rattakul suggests.
