Media Release: Regional meeting seeks solutions to reduce disaster risk in Asia

1 - 3 Apr 2014

Nai Pyi Taw, Myanmar

The 11th meeting of the Regional Consultative Committee on Disaster Management (RCC-11) will be held in Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar on 1–3 April 2014. Organized in collaboration with the Relief and Resettlement Department of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), the meeting discusses reducing disaster risk and transforming development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Interested media professionals are invited to attend a press conference on 1 April 2014 at 10.15 am at the conference venue, Hotel Royal ACE in Nay Pyi Taw. The press conference will be attended by the representatives from the Relief and Resettlement Department, GIZ of the Government of Germany and ADPC.

With 26 member countries from the Asia-Pacific region, RCC plays a pivotal role in supporting the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) 2005–2015 that aims to build the resilience of nations and communities to disasters.

“The meeting will discuss the lessons learned in incorporating disaster risk reduction into development planning processes in the region, and set the direction for the Regional Consultative Committee's work for the next ten years,” says Executive Director Mr. Shane Wright from ADPC.

The meeting will contribute to the formulation of the post-2015 framework and development agenda for disaster risk reduction through recommendations addressing essential mainstreaming components. It will also enhance the member countries’ capacities to effectively negotiate their disaster risk reduction agenda in the post-2015 development agenda forums.

“The meeting acts as a platform for sharing experiences from the current initiatives on linking disaster risk reduction and development. It also paves the way in formulating future tasks for post-2015 to be implemented by the countries of the Asia-Pacific region,” says Director General U Soe Aung of the Relief and Resettlement Department of Myanmar.

The meeting will also discuss the outline for RCC’s next program that will focus on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction. The meeting is supported by the Government of Germany through GIZ.

NOTE TO EDITOR:
Established in 2000 as one of the first regional dialogue platforms to promote consultation and cooperation on reducing disaster risk, the Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) on Disaster Management promotes peer advocacy and the exchange of experiences in disaster risk management. Its secretariat, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), initiated the committee to bring countries in the Asia-Pacific region together to achieve common goals in disaster risk management, explore ways to transform policies into practice, and promote regional cooperation.

RCC provides a consultative mechanism that guides the implementation of disaster risk management action strategies for the region, promotes co-operative disaster risk management programs on regional and sub-regional levels and guides the work of ADPC.
