SMEs trained on Business Continuity Planning

Bangkok, Thailand

Representatives from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were joined by government officials from the Ministry of Industry, Office for Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion (OSMEP) and the Department of Disaster Mitigation and Preparedness (DDPM) to take part in a course to build capacity for developing and promoting business continuity planning for SMEs in Thailand.

The course was developed by ADPC with the support of the JTI foundation to address the fact that damages to the private sector accounted for ninety percent of all losses resulting from the 2011 floods in Thailand. Of all businesses in the country, ninety percent are SMEs.

Of the SMEs affected by the flooding, between thirty and forty percent were forced to permanently shut down their businesses as a result of damages incurred. Business continuity planning for SMEs will pave the way for speedy post-disaster economic recovery in the future and ensure that losses for small business owners are less severe.

By the end of the three-day training course on 18–20 March in Bangkok, participants will become intimately familiar with business impact analyses, risk analyses, keeping business continuity plans current, essential steps of developing business continuity recovery strategies, implementing of business continuity plans and how to evaluate these plans.
