Advancing the safety of schools in Cambodia and Thailand

Country consultations on development of a common framework and monitoring indicators for safe schools for ASEAN were held in Bangkok, Thailand and Phnom Penh, Cambodia on 31 January and 4 February 2014 respectively.

The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), ASEAN Secretariat, AADMER Partnership Group (APG) and Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) are developing the common framework and monitoring indicators on Safe Schools for ASEAN with the objective to promote systematic, comprehensive and progressive school safety intervention in ASEAN region.

The Thailand consultation was attended by Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), UNICEF, World Vision, Thailand Red Cross, Plan International and other agencies. The consultation in Cambodia was attended by over 30 participants including Ministry of Education, Planning, UNICEF, Plan International, Oxfam and Action Aid.

The consultations reviewed the drafted monitoring indicators and made recommendations on steps towards the adoption of common framework for school safety. Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is a technical partner.
