On 26 - 30 January 2014, over twenty staff from various government and non-government agencies from Male’ and Atolls completed the 5-day Training of Trainers progamme for community-based disaster risk reduction (CBDRR). The training was hosted by the Government of Maldives’ National Disaster Management Center (NDMC), facilitated by Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and funded by the Australian Government.

The training featured the “National CBDRR Framework,” recently developed by NDMC and ADPC. The Framework was finalized at a high-level advocacy workshop on 23 January, attended by senior officials from key agencies. It guides guides towards a sustained, systematic and harmonized system of CBDRR in the Maldives.

Training participants learned about key concepts, tools, and planning and implementation of CBDRR interventions, about key disaster-development linkages, and the practical means to mainstream CBDRR into local development plans in the Maldives.

The training was conducted with a customized training package that aimed to enhance the capacities for CBDRR coordination and implementation across the Maldives. NDMC will be able to adapt and implement the package for future trainings.
