National training on mainstreaming disaster and climate risk management into development planning

As Myanmar accelerates socio-economic development, it’s crucially important that development gains be protected from disaster and climate risk; enhancing sustainability. Through Mainstreaming Disaster and Climate Risk Management in Development Planning, disaster and climate risk considerations will be made an integral part of development planning processes. Such considerations ensure that risks are addressed, mitigated and managed effectively.

Her Excellency Union Minister Dr. Daw Myat Myat Ohm Khin presided over the opening session of the National Training on Mainstreaming Disaster and Climate Risk Management into Development Planning, Myanmar on 4 March 2013.Various other senior delegates also presided over the session including Daw Lai Lai Thein, Director General of Planning Department, U Soe Aung, Director General of Relief and Resettlement Department, Dr. Daw Hrin Nei Thian, Director General of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology and Prof. Dr. Krasae Chanawongse, Executive Director of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC).

During the 5-day training, 30 participants from various line ministries and departments will jointly explore an array of mainstreaming disaster and climate Risk management approaches and applications in various stages of development planning processes. These include national development policy, regional and city development planning and across different development sectors. The training aims to equip concerned officials with insightful understanding and skills to apply mainstreaming DRM/CRM into their respective mandates and functions.

The training is conducted in joint collaboration with the Planning Department, Relief and Resettlement Department and Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), with support by Government of Australia through Australian Aid and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Royal Norwegian Government.
