Delegations from the Government of Ethiopia visited Asian Disaster Preparedness Center and discuss about the ADPC governance structure and program development and their applicability to the new DRM Resource Center in Ethiopia from April 1-5, 2013.

Institional Visit Objective

The objectives of the mission are as follows:

To discuss progress on the establishment of Disaster Risk Management Resource Center in Ethiopia and discuss plans for future activities of the center;
To study the ADPC governance structure, its programs and tools in disaster preparedness implemented in the region;
To identify and assess the applicability of DRM and climate forecasting and modeling tools;
To identify possible training programs that can be adopted to Africa;
To generate learnings from the experience and operation of the Disaster Management Centers of the Royal Government of Thailand; and
To observe successful community resilience programs and sub-national disaster management systems in Thailand.Scope of the Mission:

Visit the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center and discuss about the ADPC governance structure and program development and their applicability to the new DRM Resource Center in Ethiopia;
Engage with DRM professional and discuss various programs and tools in disaster preparedness being implemented on the themes of climate risk management, early warning systems, disaster management system development, mainstreaming disaster risk management into development, public health in emergencies, disaster risk assessment and monitoring and knowledge management and training & capacity building;
Visit the high-performance climate modeling unit of the ADPC and get full orientation on the operation and capacities of DRM and climate forecasting and modeling tools and systems;
Visit the National Early Warning Center of the Royal Government of Thailand and look into systems and processes that would be beneficial to Ethiopia’s Early Warning Systemand Emergency Coordination Center;
Visit the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Thailand to understand its DRM approaches and programmes; and
Visit the Phuket Urban Metropolitan Authority and a Model Community in Disaster Resilience in Phuket and study disaster management systems at sub-national level.
