Mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development a training course of the regional consultative committee on disaster management (RCC)

10 - 14 Jun 2014

Bangkok , Thailand

COURSE OVERVIEW
Disasters have increasingly negative impacts on the ability of countries to achieve development goals. Development activities that do not adequately incorporate Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) are intensifying the impacts of these disaster events. Ensuring that DRR and CCA considerations are factored into government-led development processes is therefore recognized as a crucial step towards sustainabledevelopment. In order to mainstream disaster risk reduction into development, government authorities at the national and sub-national level need to consider and treat disaster risk throughout the existing development processes followed within a country. This requires: a thorough understanding of the intricate link between disasters and development; knowledge of the ‘entry points’ for integrating DRR and CCA into development processes; and the capacity to take specific actions to mainstream DRR and CCA at the national and sub-national level and across all sectors.

The course is structured to bring together government officials from those agencies responsible for overall development planning with officials from national disaster management agencies in order to promote discussion and develop a common understanding of the key concepts of mainstreaming DRR and CCA into development. Additionally the course aims to identify approaches for mainstreaming disaster risk (current and future) concerns within development planning processes as well as showcase achievements and exchange ideas for practical implementation in the participants’ respective countries.
