14 - 15 Nov 2013

Dawei, Myanmar

The Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, Government of Myanmar has selected the Taninthayi township in southwestern Myanmar as a pilot region in mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into regional development planning. In order to achieve this objective, Planning Department, Relief and Resettlement Department and Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) together with the local authorities of Myanmar organized a two-day consultation workshop on 14 - 15 November in Dawei, Myanmar.

Aiming at giving the line ministries an orientation on the concept of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, the workshop was attended by the ministers of planning and economy, development, transport and social affairs as well as Chief of Attorney of Taninthayi. In his opening remarks, Mr. U Thein Lwin, Honourable Minister of Planning and Economy, Taninthayi stressed the importance of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into development planning in terms of making Taninthayi safer for the citizens.

During the next few months, ADPC will provide technical support to line departments of Taninthayi to successfully integrate disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in the plans and programs identified under Taninthayi’s development plan for the years 2014 - 2015.

The project is funded by Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).
