Sayaboury province in the northwestern part of Lao PDR will act as a model province in mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development in the country. This objective was set during a consultation workshop on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into Priority Investment Programming (PIP) on 23 - 25 October 2013 in Sayaboury.
Organized jointly by Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), National Disaster Management Organization, and Save the Children, the workshop discussed the concept as well as the application of disaster risk reduction mainstreaming into Sayaboury province´s development planning.
During the workshop, Mr. Viengkham Phetlangsy, Director of Provincial Department of Labor and Social Welfare of Sayaboury highlighted the importance of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction as well as the linkages between disaster risk reduction and development.
The workshop was attended by over 30 participants from provincial and pilot district´s sectoral departments. In the future, the lessons learned in Sayaboury can be utilized in other provinces in Lao PDR.
