ADPC, IUCN sign MOU on climate and disaster resilience partnership

30 Jun 2022

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand — The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 30 June 2022 to build a strategic partnership in developing and implementing projects and programmes, promote climate and disaster resilience, encouraging knowledge sharing for informed decision-making, and improving management of systemic risks across Asia and the Pacific.

The two organisations will collaborate in scaling up support to countries in the key areas of climate services, nature-based solutions (NbS), economic and fiscal assessment of investments in ecosystem protection, use of biodiversity for food and livelihood security, gender and rights-based approaches in the context of disaster risk reduction and capacity building.

"As part of this collaboration a strategic approach to NbS is one important component, based on the standards developed by IUCN and the practical experience of ADPC and IUCN. We aim to explore and promote ways that ensure rapid uptake of functioning NbS and support increased investment in NbS to make real improvements in climate resilience”. - Mr. Hans Guttman, Executive Director, ADPC.

“ADPC’s institutional expertise in climate and geospatial sciences is an invaluable resource to the partnership. Through this MOU, we seek further synergy with IUCN’s NbS initiatives along with other key programmatic areas of collaboration”.  - Dr. Dindo Campilan, Regional Director, Asia and Hub Director for Oceania, IUCN.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Hans Guttman, ADPC Executive Director and Dr. Dindo Campilan, IUCN Asia Regional Director and Oceania Hub Director. Representatives from both organisations held a joint meeting, to agree on priority actions to operationalize the partnership, at the IUCN Asia Regional Office prior  to the MOU signing.
