From 2013 onwards, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) will annually award an ADPC alumnus with the Brian Ward Memorial Practitioners’ Fellowship. The award recognizes outstanding leaders in disaster risk reduction in Asia that have received training from an ADPC course in the past.
The individual chosen for the award will be asked contribute his or her professional insight as a leading disaster risk reduction practitioner to ADPC’s annual flagship course, the regional training course on disaster management. The course provides fundamental knowledge and skills related disaster management for professionals across all sectors. Col. Brian Ward was instrumental in the development of the course, which provided the foundation for the establishment of ADPC.
Since its inception, the course has paved the path for many practitioners in the field of disaster risk reduction. The course’salumni list includes leading government officials, medical professionals, media and field practitioners. The course is well known for its participatory approach and practical curriculum, which can be applied across sectors upon participants’ return to their respective countries.
The recipient of the award will be announced in the second week of October to coincide with World Disaster Day. This fellowship for practitioners aims to encourage dialogue and experience sharing among professionals in the field of disaster risk reduction.
All are welcome to nominate. ADPC encourages anyone that would like to recognize an individual that’s making a difference in disaster risk reduction to nominate his or her candidate. The nominee must be an ADPC alumnus.Each nominator may nominate up to two alumni for the award.
Nominators must describe, in no more than 1,000 words, how theircandidate is a leader in disaster risk reduction.
