8 Aug 2013

Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar

Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) of Myanmar organized follow up training workshops on Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), climate change scenario development, and storm surge modeling in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, in the beginning of August. Tailored for the DMH officials, the training workshops were conducted by climate change and climate risk management experts from Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC).

“Our forecasting capacity has been improved after installing and providing trainings on weather research and forecasting by ADPC. We are now posting forecast products of WRF on our website”, said Dr. Hrin Nei Thiam, Director General of DMH in Myanmar, in the certificate awarding ceremony of the workshops.

“It is timely important for us to improve technical capacity on climate downscaling as there are many requests from climate sensitive sectoral institutes in the country”, she stated.

ADPC supports DMH in Myanmar to enhance its technical and human capacity to meet future challenges. Technical support for the development process is arranged by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, and financing is provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Royal Norwegian Government.

Resource inputs for the training workshops were provided by Department Head and Climatologist Dr. Senaka Basnayake, Hydrologist Dr. Yi Wang, and Climate Data Analyst Mr. Susantha Jayasingh from the Climate Change and Climate Risk Management Department at ADPC.
