Mr. Hans Guttman, Executive Director, ADPC, on International Women's Day 2018.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives”, calls for promoting gender equality in every field including disaster risk reduction (DRR), as women and girls are disproportionately affected by disasters. This fact calls for an understanding of the reasons and actions to reduce the drivers of these risks. Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is committed to actions to build women’s leadership roles, capacities and engagement in DRR and climate resilience (CR).
On International Women’s Day 2018, ADPC is pleased to announce the launch of the Gender and Diversity Committee which aims to evaluate the challenges and opportunities to promote gender equality throughout our programs.
In support of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, ADPC reaffirms its proactive approach to women's representation in all aspects of DRR and CR which are fundamental to sustainable development. ADPC also calls for an understanding of the underlying drivers of women’s and girls’ vulnerabilities to disasters to enable actions to reduce these risk.
While celebrating women’s contribution to all aspects of the social development of societies across the world, we also stress the need for women's leadership roles in analyzing, interpreting and disseminating risk information to communities.
