A local NGO member and course participant works with children during a field exercise in Xigou Village, Yanyuan County,
Sichuan Province, China, a part of the project activities which contributed to the practioner's handbook.

In 2013, with funding support by Swiss Re Foundation through Save the Children China Program (STCC), Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) developed and delivered a 3-day training course on Child Centered Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) for 30 participants who came from villages/communities, a school, NGOs and local government agencies in Yanyuan County, Sichuan Province, P.R. China. Based on outputs of the training course on CCDRM, STCC invited ADPC to work together to develop a handbook to help keep children safe during disasters through community capacity building.

Dr. LingLing Jiang, Senior Program Manager of ADPC, worked together with her colleagues Mr. Hector Lim Jr. and Mr. Bill Ho to develop a field practitioner’s handbook: Making Communities Safer for Children---An Integration of Community Based Disaster Risk Management and Child Centered Approaches. The handbook was first written in English and later translated into Mandarin. Relevant Chinese experts also added information related to China. China’s Social Publishing House in Beijing published the handbook in July 2016, and the first 2,000 volumes were sent to Save the Children’s office in Chengdu.

A school teacher, who is also a course participant, explains the group assignment during the course exercise in Xigou Village,
Yanyuan County, Sichuan Province, China.

The handbook was made possible through the partnership of Save the Children China and ADPC. Moreover, valuable comments and suggestions were provided by a number of specialists from Save the Children China, Save the Children Denmark, Save the Children UK and Save the Children Australia namely Xiaowen Fan, Roz Keating, Nick Hall, Nick Ireland, and other supporting staff of Save the Children China during the development of the Handbook.

This is the first book that includes international concepts on CBDRM and CCDRM to be published in China. The target audience of this handbook includes: 1) community organizers implementing CCDRM at local level; 2) trainers and facilitators developing CCDRM training; 3) local and national government agencies and officials and practitioners responsible in overseeing CCDRM. This Handbook has 9 Chapters with 24 case studies which were selected from several countries including China.
