Free Public Seminar on Global Food Security at ADPC

11 Aug 2016

Bangkok, Thailand

As the world population rises, food security is increasingly important.

Around 525.6 million people in Asia do not have enough to eat. The world is facing a food emergency, with one in nine people on earth going to bed without eating. As global reserves of wheat, rice, maize and other grain run low, fluctuating climate threatens to create a food crisis in many countries by effecting crop yield. With the world’s population likely to exceed 9 billion by the year 2050, achieving sustainable food security is one of the greatest challenges the humanity faces today.

Join Asian Disaster Preparedness Center for a free public event from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Thursday 11 August on global food security.

Dr. Prasad S. Thenkabail, U.S. Geological Survey, is the special guest speaker for the event who will discuss his global food security project, which aims to overcome cropland limitations and ensure food and water resources remain sustainable in the future.

Dr. Thenkabail is a Research Geographer and well-recognized international expert in remote sensing and geographic information systems (RS/GIS) and their application to agriculture, wetlands, natural resource management, water resources, forests, sustainable development, and environmental studies.
