February 22, Ongoing search, rescue and retrieval operations

The official figure of death tow is 107 PERSONS (including significant body parts recovered) as of 12PM FEB 22.

Saint Bernard's Coordination Meeting Report, as of 5pm, 22 February, 2006

Current Situation:

1. Ongoing search, rescue and retrieval operations. Only one body was retrieved.

2. The relief committee continues to receive cash donations/ relief supplies.

3. The health and sanitation committee continues to decontaminate applying lime to the dead bodies and its surrounding and also disposing dead bodies.

4. Two units of 30 kW generators sets (serials NDCC-04-64) arrived yesterday and were dispatched to the site.

5. The UNDAC Team, together with Oxfam GB and GTZ, provided technical assistance to the local DOH in enhancing its current organizational structure more responsive to the health needs of the affected communities.

PROPOSALS

  • PAGASA - Establishment of synoptic weather station at St. Bernard in the school premises at Tambis 1 an area located before the river with a ground area of 1,000 square meters and station floor area of 42 square meters. The ground area should be of trees and vegetation taller than 1 meter to have accurate measurements of wind and rainfall weather parameters. The data that should be obtained will be used in daily weather analysis and forecasting at the forecasting center in Manila. This office shall serve as the information office for dissemination of weather situation and forecast and early warning for decision matters of southern Leyte weather related events.
  • Updating of Geophysical Hazard Maps by the DOST - The maps shall be the basis for development activities for this area and for early warning for disaster prevention and mitigation.
