In Pursuit of CBDRM Champions

Regognizing Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance - The Philippine Experience

In order to strengthen the partnerships between NDMOs and CBDRM pratitioners, a recognition scheme drawing on the Philippine experience will be developed in PDRSEA4 to celebrate the leadership roles of NDMOs and their CBDRM best practices.

Since 1999, In celebration of the National Disaster Consciousness Month in July, the Philippine Government, through its National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) , is in pursuit of recipients for Gawad Kalasag Award. This award recognizes the outstanding performance of local government units in disaster management, private and volunteer organizations, non-government agencies in the provision of humanitarian assistance and individuals who have shown extra ordinary courage, heroism, self-sacrifice and bravery against all odds in times of natural and human induced disasters and emergencies.

On its 8th year, Gawad Kalasag aims to promote total disaster risk management among the various stakeholders. In April 13, 2007, the NDCC issued a Memorandum Circular on Revised Guidelines on the Institutionalization of the Search for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance. The Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government is chairing again the award committee. The checklist for evaluating nominees in different categories has been enhanced to incorporate, among others significant lessons identified in CBDRM related program implementation of both government and non-government agencies.
