COUNTRIES

Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, inhabited by nearly 210 million people. Over the past three decades, the country has moved from having an agriculture-based to an industry-based economy. However, with half the country's workforce directly dependent on it for their livelihoods, agriculture remains an important sector. Forests, estate crops, and related activities also constitute on important sector. Although ENSO influences the climate of the entire Indonesian archipelago, it is important to note that there are discernible regional and seasonal differences. Since 1998, ECE has collaborated with various organizations in Indonesia to understand these differences and to learn how to reduce the disastrous effects of extreme climate events.

Philippines

The Philippines suffers from droughts, flood, and strong winds associated with weather systems and patterns such as tropical cyclones, monsoons, and El Niño and La Niña. An average of 20 tropical cyclones occur within the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR) every year, of which eight or nine cross the country. During the last El Niño episode, agricultural production experienced a 7% decline. Extreme climate events also affect water supply, environmental and health, and the economy. Since 1998, ECE has collaborated with national partners in the Philippines to better understand these events and to learn how to reduce their disastrous impacts.

Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Every year monsoon rains, typhoons, floods, flash floods, drought and other calamities cause death, injury, crop loss, and infrastructure damage. The country is located in the typhoon center of the western Pacific. Vietnam, as well as many countries of the region and around the world, has suffered disasters affecting socio-economic development and stabilization. Lower rainfall, water shortages in many areas, and severe storms have emphasized that El Niño, La Niña, and other extreme climate events have increased the vulnerabilites of Vietnam's economy and people's lives. Since 1998, ECE has collaborated with national partners in Vietnam to understand these events and to learn how to reduce their disastrous impacts
