Integrating
Disaster Mitigation in Urban Planning Education in Asia
ADPC, in partnership
with the International Institute for Geo-information Science and
Earth Observation (ITC), the Netherlands, and Ecole Nationale des
Sciences Geographiques (ENSG), France, conducted the regional training
course cum workshop on 11-12 August 2003 in Bangkok, Thailand under
the project entitled "Sustainable Capacity Building on Urban
Disaster Mitigation in Asia using IT&C Learning Tools (CASITA)".
Twenty five lecturers, researchers and urban planners from 14 partner
universities and training institutes in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia,
Lao PDR, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam attended
the course.
The CASITA project
aims to build capacity on modern disaster mitigation training tools
by providing support to the institutionalization of disaster mitigation
courses in the urban planning curricula at the university level.
During the course,
the participants' shared their on-going efforts and future plans
of integrating disaster mitigation in the curricula and presented
outlines of case studies to be developed by each of the participating
institution.

Commemorating
the 80th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake and the International
Disaster Reduction Day on 1 September and 8 October 2003, respectively,
a public forum on "Living with Risk are we prepared for
the next big one?," will be held on 4 October 2003, 14:00-18:00

Tokyo, Japan.
Jointly
organized by the United Nations University (UNU), Cabinet Office

an opportunity to discuss the current status and challenges of earthquake
