Community Based Disaster Management Course (CBDM-10)

Closing Speech by Mr. John West from World Vision, Kenya office

When all is said and all is done, ultimately training capability building is not what we are about. It is about saving lives and building resilient livelihoods and communities.

During the two weeks of course, sometimes we (participants) have debated too much and sometimes too little. We may have been vigorous in our discussion. Thank you for your patience.

We are so diverse group (no-Apology)! You have embraced that. May be you are too patient. Earlier we have been feeling home sick. Now we feel class-sick.

The ADPC has planted SEEDS! You can be confident there will be many strong and virile forests growing from the seeds you have planted.

We have felt the attention given by ADPC to us. We have come to know you and love you- when you have respected us. Thank you for regarding us as part of your family. Our gift to you is for us to go and do it!

To ensure participation by people from places like Fiji and Solomon Islands is a great initiative. We appreciate the efforts that ADPC might have put in this endeavor.

We want the ADPC to be the most professional and the most advanced possible. We want you to stay on the leading edge of disaster preparedness in this case, Community Based Preparedness, in particular. You have the opportunity to help lead the process and thinking globally. We support you. Our support will not be only in words. But you will see tangible actions.

Thank you.

Note: He delivered this speech in closing ceremony of the course on behalf of the participants.
