Disaster Reduction Program for Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam (DRP-CLV) Updates

The DRP-CLV completed its inception phase (January-April 2002) with a review of the proposed program’s implementation. As a result, its objectives were aligned to suit the program countries’ needs at national and provincial levels. Dr Suvit Yodmani, ADPC Executive Director, held several high-level meetings with senior government officials and national disaster management organizations (NMDOs) to understand their countries’ needs and to introduce the program, its aims and objectives. These activities were identified as a result of these consultations and reviews of existing literature:

• Technical support to NDMOs in implementation of ongoing programs to build synergy with program activities
• Development of short- and medium-term strategies for community disaster management public awareness programs in eastern provinces of Cambodia and central provinces of Vietnam
• Development of primary school teaching materials which integrate disaster management for Lao PDR
• Through consultation and close collaboration with NDMOs, identification of further priority areas for development of five-year action plans on public awareness in all three countries
• Award of three scholarships to government officials of the three countries to participate in ADPC’s regional training courses on Community Based Disaster Management or Urban Flood Mitigation (one scholarship per country)
• Delivery of a national training course on Community Based Disaster Management for 15-20 provincial and district government officials in Vietnam, and
• Establishing and maintaining webpages at ADPC, and creating a regular newsletter column to disseminate program information to a wider audience.
