PAYS TRIBUTE TO STAFF, 19

ADPC, at its gala new
year celebration on 19 Jan 2007, paid special
tribute to the commitment and dedication of those
eighteen of its staff who had this year marked
ten and five years service to the organization.
Four staff, Mr. Loy Rego, Ms. Hla Hla, Ms.
Benjaporn Sutthiprapa and Ms. Suree Sungcharoen
were recognised and praised for their long service
of ten years or more. Fourteen others, Ms. Clarence
M. Carlos, Ms. Wannapa Boonprasom, Mr. Prasarn
Pueng-ngoen, Ms. Janette Ugsang, Ms. Cinthuja
Leon, Ms. Lolita Bildan, Ms. Budsarin Chuensombat,
Ms. Chutima Saengnapabovorn, Ms. Ling Ling Jiang,
Mr. N.M.S.I Aranmepola, Ms. Sirikarn Kahattha,
Ms. Anchalee Sirivadhanakul, Mr. Frederick John
Abo and Mr. A.R. Subbiah were recognized for
their contributions of over five years.
Ms. Hla Hla, Senior Manager of the Finance team
in her acceptance speech recalled the challenges
and rewards of ADPC in meeting its goal and
mission with the uncompromising and complete
support of its entire staff. Ms. Hnin Nwe Win,
Senior Manager of the Disaster Management Systems
team expressed her heartfelt thanks and appreciation
to ADPC for the opportunities, challenges and
friendly professional atmosphere that it offered
to all its staff, helping them to develop their
careers through the organisations successes.
Dr. Suvit Yodmani, Executive Director, presently
seconded to the Royal Thai Government, presided
over the celebration and presented plaques and
certificates of appreciation to all eighteen.
He also conveyed his gratitude to all the staff
for their long-standing loyalty to the organization
and thanked them for their contributions that
have helped ADPC develop and grow over the past
twenty years. The ensuing gala celebrations

Communicating Disasters,
21-22 Dec, Bangkok
ADPCs Information & Knowledge Management
unit participated in a regional meeting for
media professionals, disaster researchers, managers
and development communication specialists from
the main Tsunami affected countries in Asia
was held on the eve of the disasters second
anniversary. The meeting was organized by TVE
Asia Pacific and UNDP. The meeting focused on
the role of media professionals and their use
of information and communication technologies
(ICTs) before, during and after a disaster;
to share lessons learned among media professionals
and key players in disaster risk reduction based
on the experience of the Tsunami disaster; and
to come up with suggestive guidelines for engaging
the mass media and new media for more effective
communication before, during and after disasters.
The discussions, findings and conclusions of
the meeting will be captured in a book to be
published.

SUPER TYPHOON DURIAN [REMING/24W/0621]

Relief and Operations (CoE, Hawaii)
Relief and recovery operations continued
as of Thursday (December 7) in areas affected
by Typhoon Durian (local name: Reming) in the
southern part of the northern Luzon region,
as weather forecasters warned of a new tropical
storm heading towards the central Visayas region.
Philippine officials say that up to 1,316 people
are dead or missing from landslides triggered
by Durian last week. At least 570 people have
been confirmed dead, while another 746 people
are missing, according to the latest National
Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) figures
on December 6 (Wednesday).
04 December 2006. "REMING"
has moved farther away and no longer poses a
threat to any part of the country.
03 December 2006.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has declared
a state of national calamity. She has authorized
the release of PhP 1.0 Billion to fund relief
and rehabilitation efforts sustained from the
onslaught of TY Milenyo (Xangsane), TY Paeng
(Cimarron) and TY Reming (Durian).

PHILIPPINES. Super Typhoon DURIAN (REMING) weakens
slightly to a 240-km/hr Category 4 system as
it remains a potentially catastrophic and life-threatening
typhoon. Eye becoming larger as it nears Catanduanes
& Camarines Sur. Landfall in just a few
hours.This system is much stronger than XANGSANE
(MILENYO) which crossed almost the same area
2 months ago...All interests in the Northern
Samar, Bicol Region & Quezon Provinces should
closely monitor the progress of this extremely
