Overall Project Information Management Goals
It is essential to try and establish a clear idea of the kind of conditions
which need to be set during the early stages. The following is a first
attempt to do so:
- Fast, reliable, and straightforward communications and information
sharing amongst project participants
- A rich information environment. if people want specific information
- they should be able to locate it within two days, without difficulty
- Enable access to information on other regional mitigation projects,
and inexpensive and reliable communications with partners in those projects
- Encourage development of new ideas
- Provide interdisciplinary information
- Develop ways of highlighting inconsistencies and gaps
- Include speculative material where appropriate
- Encourage browsing
- Encourage informal communications
- Develop a stable, sustainable, and consistent information framework.
Clearly defined information "products" and clearly defined routes
to obtain them, and to respond to them
- Fast and inexpensive replication of documents within the constraints
of copyright
- Improved and growing access to current information on methodologies
- Economy - minimum loss of material, reuse as many lessons as possible
- Retention - keep document collections intact once produced
- Capture as many lessons learned in project implementation as possible
- Collect material which can be exploited effectively with the next generation
of information technology
- Support the technical evolution of communications networks as a research
and educational infrastructure in mitigation
- Reduce information transfer costs
- Reduce project marketing costs
- Attract additional funding where required
- Encourage sustainable networks and sub-networks of participants
- Ensure that the information component has an identity, and a clear
framework of predictable and stable elements
- Provide an environment which encourages test and change continually
