PROJECT OVERVIEW

Background

The Indonesia project objective is to reduce the vulnerability of the urban population, infrastructure, critical facilities, and shelter in the Indonesian cities to earthquake hazards, with the City of Bandung as the case study for the demonstration project. Special attention are paid to policy aspects, where issues on strengthening the disaster management institutions and earthquake mitigation are addressed at the local as well as national level. Emphasis is also out on school safety, as it is considered as one of strategic target of mitigation initiative. The first phase of the project focuses on hazard analysis and mapping, and vulnerability assessment of the City of Bandung. During the second phase, which focuses on the development and implementation of mitigation strategies, activities varying from the strengthening of the local building control agency and the local disaster management organization to awareness campaign for school children are conducted.


Objectives

  • To reduce the natural disaster vulnerability of urban population, infrastructure, lifeline facilities and shelter in the City of Bandung, with the emphasis on earthquake hazard.
  • To promote replication and adaptation of successful earthquake hazard mitigation measures to all large and earthquake vulnerable cities of Indonesia.
