--- (1) Successful commemoration of Disaster Reduction Day in Hat Yai,
Songkla Province, Thailand
The commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction
successfully took place in Hat Yai, Songkla Province, Thailand on 12
October 2004 under the Thailand project of ADPC. The very first such
event held outside Bangkok was participated by more than 500 people led
by the Hat Yai City Mayor, the Governor of Songkla Province and ADPC's
Executive Director. The day started with the official opening ceremony
and followed by the inauguration of the Hat Yai Flood Prevention
Center, press conference, presentation of certificates to about 90
leaders and volunteers who underwent the Flood Preparedness Planning
training course organized by ADPC. Prizes were also awarded to the
winners of the painting competition with a theme on "Flood
Preparedness" to about 30 school children from 16 primary and secondary
schools in the province. There was also a parade which was participated
by the Governor, the Mayor, several Bangkok-based TV stars, and
students and residents of Songkla province. Emergency demonstration
activities on search and rescue, fire, and first aid also took place.

--- (2) KYRGYZSTAN: ADB to reduce vulnerability of the poor to natural
disasters
ANKARA (IRIN) - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has a new project in
Kyrgyztan which aims to reduce the vulnerability of the poor to natural
disasters and increase its preparedness for emergencies. The US $1
million programme, funded by the Japanese government, will start in
January 2005.

--- (3) Asian Seismological Commission (ASC): 5th General Assembly held
in Yerevan, Armenia, 18-21 October 2004
The ASC was established in 1996 with the objectives of promoting
scientific cooperation and exchange among its national members,
upgrading research activities, strengthening disaster mitigation and
cooperation with other international and regional agencies, the 5th ASC
invited participation from scientists, researchers, government, and
several other stakeholders engaged in seismic risk reduction in Asia
and other parts of the world.
