Public Health and Emergency Management Courses

The Public Health in Emergencies (PHCE) team of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) partners with various health organizations to organize the following health-related disaster management courses:

- LEADERS Course in Asia, 29 March-10 April 2004, Bangkok, Thailand This is an international course on Development and Disasters with special focus on health. The World Health Organization (WHO) and its Southeast Asia Regional Office will tailor the English-language LEADERS Course held last February 2003 in Jamaica, and present it to a global audience, primarily Asia, with support from the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC).

- The Fourth Inter-regional Training Course on Public Health and Emergency Management in Asia and the Pacific (PHEMAP-4), 19 April-1 May 2004, Bangkok, Thailand In collaboration with WHO, ADPC will organize this course to help countries of the region develop more effective policy procedures, plans, guidelines and standards of best practices for health sector emergency management.

Southeast Asian Disaster Management Practitioners' Workshop, 26-29 April 2004, Bangkok, Thailand

Organized by ADPC, the workshop, with the theme "Institutionalizing CBDM in government policy making, planning and program activities", will discuss disaster risk management issues, concerns and practices common to all ASEAN countries. The workshop aims to:

    a) promote knowledge building on community-based disaster risk management in the region;
    b) learn lessons from sharing amongst ASEAN countries as well as from the global disaster risk management practices on community-based programming;
    c) contribute to region´s policy and strategy formulation for the benefit of governments, NGOs and donors and multi-lateral agencies;
    d) offer an opportunity to identify national and local activities to which peers commit themselves to provide support to each other;
    e) foster and strengthen connections among practitioners and organizations; and
    f) publish and disseminate written materials on community-based disaster risk management useful to the end users within and outside the ASEAN region.

Workshop on Technological tools in the information management: Working model and its components, 16-20 February 2004, Guatemala City

The workshop, to be organized by the Regional Disaster Information Center (CRID) with the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), aims to strengthen the training process developed as part of the activities of the Central American Health and Disaster Information Network Project. Among the topics to be discussed are:

(a) LISDE: Disaster Information Locator;
(b) WinIsis: Database management program;
(c) Document digitalization process; and
(d) Interface iAH for database availability in Internet.

Disaster Recovery Planning:

Insuring Business Continuity 1-3 March 2004, Atlanta, Georgia 21-23 April 2004, New York, New York 17-19 May 2004 Las Vegas, Nevada Organized by the American Management Association International, these workshops are participant-oriented and will provide the knowledge and tools to develop a comprehensive program to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from both large and small disasters. Topics include step-by-step project plans; methodologies for identifying and analyzing threats; processes for identifying essential business functions; how to develop and conduct a training and testing program; and how to plan for continued communication with stakeholders.

International Conference on Managing Seismic Risk in Developing Countries, 17-19 March 2004, Bhopal, India

International Workshop on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management (ISCRAM2004), 3-4 May 2004, Brussels, Netherlands

Organized by Tilburg University and the Belgian Nuclear Research Center SCK-CEN, this workshop will focus on planning for crisis response, including organizing training exercises; responding to a crisis situation; and evaluating performance during and after crises. National Severe Weather Workshop 2004, 4-6 March 2004, Oklahoma

This three-day workshop, with the theme "Partners Keeping the Public Warned and Informed," is designed to enhance partnerships among severe weather forecasters and researchers, emergency managers, broadcast meteorologists, businesses, storm spotters and other weather enthusiasts.
